I'm happier when I express how thankful I am.
One could very well be grateful. But they need to express the gratitude, expressing it allows us to acknowledge it and that works in our favor! It makes us happy!! This is something I also learnt by studying two courses on Coursera: 'The Science of Well Being,' and 'Resilience Skills in a Time of Uncertainty.'
And tbh this is also why I'm so drawn to the act of art journaling. Art journaling gives me a fun way to express gratitude about things instead of simply jotting them down. The colorful markers and paints before me make the process of writing more exciting and meaningful.
There's just something about being able to do just everything and anything on a piece of paper which further accentuates the feeling of being grateful. Its wholesome, empowering and it works as creative therapy.
It's a practice I started when I was down in the dumps once upon a time. I left it for a long while thereafter, and have recently begun to take it up again. I was looking forward to the release that would come with scribbling, writing, or just simply messing with art supplies with a sheet of paper. No rules, no requirements to draw or color a certain way. Just the freedom to do whatever you want. And the consequent feeling of contentment which follows!
